Easter Week: the Schedule on Hvar

The ‘Following the Cross Processions’ are not some kind of folk festival: they are an authentic, non-commercial expression of the deep reverence which local people hold for traditional values. Alongside their strong spiritual significance, the processions are an attractive, picturesque sight, with the night lit up by the long lines of men walking with their lanterns and large votive candles. Singers chanting ancient sacral harmonies walk behind each Cross-bearer and his companions, and behind them come the rest of the procession followers. That is why each year increasing numbers of visitors from Croatia and abroad travel to Hvar for the Easter celebrations. The processions always leave them deeply and lastingly moved.
